Alder
/ˈɔl.dɚ/ n. a pioneer tree
Alder is often the first thing to grow on bare or disturbed ground, near rivers and coastlines. It enriches the soil so other trees can take root after it. Its wood holds up in water, which is why boatbuilders have long used it.
Grows first on new ground. Makes room for what comes after.
